Over three fateful days in July of 1863, Union and Confederate forces clashed in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in what was to become the deadliest battle of the Civil War. Confederate General Robert E. Lee struck boldly into northern territory where his troops clashed with the Union army under the command of General George Meade. In three days, approximately 175,000 soldiers met on the field of battle, and more than 51,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing. After the disastrous Pickett's Charge on the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg Lee’s army retreated back to Virginia and continued to fight for another two years before the war’s end.
