Innumerable battles and skirmishes took place during the Civil War throughout the cities, towns, and villages of Virginia, but Winchester may be one of the few to actually change hands over 70 times during the war.  Winchester was also the site of several major Civil War battles.  The city’s two Civil War orientation centers will provide visitors with all of the information they need to start a fascinating and informative trip through Winchester.
There’s the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, The Old Court House Civil War Museum, where captured and convalescing soldiers left their mark, Stonewall Cemetery and the Winchester National Cemetery, and even Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum.
