Take a moment to learn about the newest medium for displaying fine art and culture. The Lorton Workhouse Arts Center places all who visit in the center of art as its created.
The mission of the Workhouse Arts Center is to enrich the lives of all within its reach by creating a vibrant cultural community that fosters a diverse offering of arts, education, social and entertainment experiences for people of all ages.
The historic former progressive-era correctional facility, now the Workhouse Arts Center, opened its doors to the public in 2008 and has established its credentials as a cultural mecca. It boasts 100 working studio artists, 40 separate art exhibitions, more than 130 classes and workshops by nationally and internationally known artists, music, live theatre, film series and celebrity performances. Visitors of all ages can tour the grounds, learn of the rich history and are encouraged to visit artists while they work in their studios. In 2010 and 2011, the Workhouse will add a premier theatre, an Event Center and improved Kid Zone. New artist residences will provide a much needed live-work arrangement for local and visiting artists.
When all phases of the renovation are complete, the Workhouse Arts Center will consist of 234,000 square feet of adaptively re-used space and 40 acres of open space. It provides a unique, quality arts interaction experience to the millions who live in and visit the Washington, DC region. In years to come, there will be even more exciting ways for the public to escape to arts and entertainment!
