Christmas at Mount Vernon has been named as one of the "12 Places to Catch the Holiday Spirit" by AAA! Mount Vernon is again joyfully decking the halls for Christmas at Mount Vernon, a special daytime program offered through January. Themed decorations (including 12 Christmas trees), a gingerbread Mount Vernon, historical chocolate-making demonstrations, and 18th-century dancing will be offered. This year visitors will be able to experience the following activities: Special Mansion Tours: Tour the rarely-open third floor of the Mansion and learn how the Washingtons Celebrated Christmas. George Washington's Christmas Camel: In 1787, George Washington paid 18 shillings to bring a camel to Mount Vernon for the enjoyment of his guests. Visit Aladdin the camel, located across from the Bowling Green Gate. Mount Vernon in Gingerbread: View a five-foot-wide gingerbread replica of the Mansion. 18th-Century Chocolate Making Demonstrations: Watch our costumed chocolatiers produce chocolate using 18th-century techniques. Chocolate Toast to Christmas: Taste our 18th-century-style chocolate drink, a Washington family favorite. 18th-Century Entertainment: Costumed friends and family of the Washington teach dancing or tell stories about Christmas at Mount Vernon.
