The Workhouse Arts Center Celebrates 50 Years of LOVE
The Workhouse Arts Center celebrates 50 years of Virginia is for Lovers by hosting (and decorating) Fairfax County's first permanent LOVEworks sign! After touring Fairfax County for three months, the LOVEworks sign will arrive at it's final destination where resident artists will transform it into a one-of-a-kind piece of art that will be on display for the world to see. The Workhouse is a regionally - and internationally - recognized innovative collaboration of visual and performing arts, education, community engagement, historical perspective, and personal enrichment. This former federal prison is known for housing the suffragists who were protesting women's right to vote in early 20th century America. Once the prison closed, the property was transformed into an artist colony that currently consists of six (6) artist studio buildings, the main galleries, and the W-3 Theatre. They support more than 100 professional and emerging artists by providing them affordable studios and galleries to exhibit their work. Instead of only viewing the art, visitors are encouraged to interact with the artists when they visit. The Workhouse also offers over 800 arts education classes and workshops in a broad spectrum of art disciplines.
