Birgit's German Red Cabbage
½ cup of red wine
2 cups of water
- Slice red cabbage. No white stumps. Heat up oil and bacon in large pot. Add shredded red cabbage and let simmer for 5 minutes. Stir occasionally. Pour the vinegar, salt, pepper, let it simmer and add Red Wine. Keep stirring. Add water.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until the cabbage is tender, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
Reheat the red cabbage two or three times prior to serving. It will enrich the flavor!
