As the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary—known as the Semiquincentennial—Fairfax County is launching an exciting video series, spearheaded by the 250th Commission, in partnership with the History Commission and Channel 16. This docuseries will capture the reflections of county residents on this historic milestone and envision our shared future.
About the Series: “The Revolutionary War Was a Revolution of Ideas”
This series isn’t just about looking back—it’s about looking forward. Through personal stories and community voices, the series will explore how revolutionary ideas born in 1776 still shape our lives today. From individual liberty and economic freedom to equality and the rule of law, these founding principles continue to inspire, challenge, and evolve.
Guiding Principles of the Project:
People-Focused: Fairfax County’s strength lies in its diversity. By spotlighting a wide range of resident voices, the series will create a rich, inclusive narrative of who we are and how we contribute to the American story.
Past, Present & Future: The Semiquincentennial isn’t only about history. It’s about understanding where we came from, where we are now, and where we want to go. The series will examine how the founding ideals apply to the modern Fairfax County experience.
A More Perfect Union: By documenting lived experiences, the series aims to inspire future generations to participate in civic life and continue building Fairfax as the premier place to live, work, learn, and grow.
Oral Histories: Your Voice Matters
The heart of this initiative will be oral history interviews. Residents will be asked to reflect on the founding principles of our nation—such as natural rights, liberty, and the rule of law—and share how these ideas resonate in their own lives. We’ll also explore perceived gaps and aspirations for a better future.
Key Revolutionary Ideas That Still Shape Us:
1. Natural Rights and Equality – All people are inherently equal and born with unalienable rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
2. Separation of Powers – Dividing government into three branches protects us from tyranny and ensures accountability.
3. Individual Liberty and Freedom – Freedom of speech, religion, and the press are essential to a thriving democracy.
4. Economic Freedom – Free enterprise and property rights promote innovation and opportunity.
5. Rule of Law – No one is above the law. Justice must be fair, consistent, and accessible to all.
Fairfax County invites you to be a part of this historic storytelling project. Together, we’ll celebrate our revolutionary roots and shape a vision for the next 250 years.
Stay tuned to Channel 16 and Fairfax County platforms for upcoming episodes and interviews. Let your voice be part of history!
