Fairfax, VA – On March 20, 2025, the Fairfax County Government Center hosted a momentous Naturalization Ceremony at 11:00 AM, marking a significant milestone for 75 individuals who took the oath of citizenship. The event was organized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and sponsored by the Fairfax County 250th Commission.
Ms. Gretchen Bulova, the chair of the Fairfax County 250th Commission and a member of the VA250 state commission, delivered the keynote address. In her remarks, Ms. Bulova emphasized the historical significance of the date. On March 20, 1775, 100 delegates representing counties across Virginia, assembled in Richmond to discuss, debate, and decide what they were going to do to defend their rights as British Americans who lacked representation in Parliament. Ms. Bulova spoke movingly of the rich history of Fairfax County, congratulating the new citizens for being a part of the future history of Fairfax County and our wonderful country.
Fairfax County, formed in 1742 from the northern part of Prince William County, was named after Thomas, sixth Lord Fairfax, who owned vast tracts of land in Northern Virginia. This historical context adds a layer of significance to the ceremony, as the county continues to welcome new citizens over 280 years later. Today, Fairfax County is a vibrant and diverse community where over 100 languages are spoken, reflecting its rich cultural diversity.
Following the ceremony, the Fairfax County Virginia chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution hosted a reception to celebrate the new citizens and their families. This event also marked the first public event held by the Fairfax 250th Commission, highlighting its commitment to commemorating the county's 250th anniversary.
The new citizens, hailing from varied countries of origin, expressed their joy and pride in becoming part of the American fabric.
