All Hallows Eve House of Reptiles and Night Ride

Oct 29, Ellanor C. Lawrence Park

Address: 5040 Walney Rd, Chantilly, VA
Times: 7-8:30pm
Phone: (703) 631-0013
Admission: $10

Halloween has almost arrived, and with the scariest of holidays comes fun-filled events for families, such as Ellanor C. Lawrence Park's All Hallows Eve House of Reptiles and Night Ride on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. From 7 to 8:30 p.m., families are invited to test their courage and challenge their fears and phobias as they meet and touch creepy-crawly creatures in darkened rooms decorated for the season. This campfire program concludes with a wagon ride through a moonlit meadow and s'mores. The cost is $10 per person. Registration is available through Parktakes Online or by calling 703-222-4664. For information, call the park at 703-631-0013.

Participants will venture through two rooms of the old Lawrence home at Middlegate, where they'll feel the skin and shells of a variety of snakes, turtles, and salamanders -- if they dare. With its creaking floors and shadowy, echoing rooms, Middlegate provides a spooky ambience for learning about local reptiles and amphibians. Fun facts will be shared, such as how eastern king snakes eat venomous snakes, how spotted salamanders use poison for protection, and how a snapping turtle can bite while its head is fully retracted in its shell. There is no real danger to participants; however, children under the age of four will not be able to touch the critters.

While riding through the meadow on the 15-minute wagon ride, participants may catch a glimpse of some of the park's nocturnal hunters. A watchful owl may be seen perched in a tree or diving silently toward a mouse in the field. The shining eyes of foxes and coyotes patrolling the perimeter of the forest may be illuminated by the naturalist's flashlight. Who knows what's lurking in the dark? Animal sightings will be discussed around the warm glow of a bonfire while participants roast s'mores and calm their nerves.
