Fairfax County has two Metro Stations (Franconia-Springfield and Huntington) that will be closed for renovation during the summer of 2019, from May 25 through early September 2019. Because of this, plans have been put in place to travel via alternative means between Washington, DC, the Pentagon, and Reagan National Airport and the Springfield area of Fairfax County. Below we have listed out some of these transportation options, including routes to and from Washington, DC, and free shuttle service to/from Reagan National Airport.

For up to date information on the Metro Platform Improvement Program, visit the WMATA website and sign up for MetroAlerts for the continuous information. You can also visit Fairfax County's Department of Transportation page for additional updates and even more alternative routes including details on Fairfax Connector bus service.

Other Tips for Visitors

  • If you are planning to use your car during your vacation, consider avoiding rush hour travel times (usually between the hours of 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm). There are many great restaurants and attractions nearby, so use this opportunity to visit a few local gems.
  • If you are still planning your stay, Fairfax County has 100+ hotels available - many that are near alternative Metrorail stations or that have direct access to certain travel routes. Take a look at this Hotel Map to help guide you.
  • If you are here with multiple people, consider carpooling or using ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. Expect delays on the roads, so plan accordingly and leave extra travel time.
  • Consider biking! See Fairfax County from a whole new perspective. Capital Bikeshare stations located in various areas of the county.
